From Georgia Center for Nonprofits
The Georgia Center for Nonprofits monitors national policy and
represents Georgia nonprofits in national matters that impact our
sector via a partnership with Independent
Sector. Today, we want to alert you to two
issues at hand in Washington that could have real impacts on
nonprofits nationwide, including Georgia. Below, read more about the
importance of reinstating
the IRA charitable rollover and
learn more about proposed
IRS regulations that
have major implications on political activity for all tax exempt
organizations.
The Georgia Center for Nonprofits will be signing
Independent Sector’s positions on these issues, and we urge you to
sign your organization on as well to give Georgia’s nonprofit sector
a strong voice in these important issues. Read below to learn more
about each topic and how you can help.
Reinstating the IRA Charitable Rollover Provision
Deadline – Monday, February 24
Originally created by the Pension Protection Act of 2006 as a way to
encourage older Americans to make gifts to charities, the IRA
charitable rollover provision in the tax code allows individuals age
70 ˝ to donate up to $100,000 to a qualifying public charity
directly from his or her IRA without incurring tax on the
withdrawal. During the first two years the IRA charitable rollover
was available, it prompted more than $140 million in charitable
donations, with the median gift just under $4,500. Beneficiaries
included social service providers, religious organizations, cultural
institutions and schools – organizations that benefit communities
and improve lives every day.
This provision, along with a number of other critical charitable
giving incentives, was allowed to expire on January 1, 2014.
However, efforts are
underway in Congress to reinstate these provisions into law, and we
hope you will help us communicate to lawmakers the importance of the
IRA charitable rollover.
Independent Sector will be sending a letter to all U.S. Senators in
support of this provision. Visit
their information hub to learn more about this issue, read
the official letter and consider signing
on your organization.
Proposed IRS Regulations on Political Activity for
Tax-Exempt Organizations
Deadline – Wednesday, February 26
The IRS has issued proposed regulations that put forth guidance for
tax-exempt organizations on political activity and has opened a
public comment period that closes on February 27. These regulations
are an important first step in clarifying the rules for political
activity by tax-exempt organizations, but the proposed guidance
contains a number of troubling elements and warrants significant
revision before it becomes public law.
Visit Independent Sector’s information
hub on this legislation, read
their drafted comments, and consider signing
