Welfare Watch - August 10, 2010 - Your Phone Call Counts - Extension of FMAP

From Voices for Children:

Please call your Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives today and ask him to vote in favor of critical funding to support child health and education in Georgia!

Later today, the members of the House of Representatives will take a vote on HR 1586, a bill which extends for 6 months an increase in federal match dollars (FMAP) that states receive to help fund the Medicaid program.  The bill also includes funding specifically to help protect education jobs within states.

Upon passage of the bill, Georgia stands to receive $228 million in federal dollars to help at this time of particular need while we continue to struggle within the current economic downturn.  Without action, we brace ourselves for further cuts that will impact access to health services for kids and that also will further cripple our already fragile state budget.

Families in Georgia now are counting on leadership that will help to protect what matters most to them.  We ask for you to lend your voice and call your U.S. House Member and ask him to vote in favor of funding for education and for the extension of the enhanced FMAP.

While we ask that you call your Congressman and ask for a favorable vote today, we also want to inform you that funding, in part, will be paid for by reductions in certain benefits within the food stamps program.  Prospective reductions in benefits are not anticipated until 2014.  So between now and then, Voices, with your help, will continue to urge our leaders to restore funding to the food stamp program, as the reality is that many of the families who rely on Medicaid and PeachCare coverage for their children also rely on food stamps to help put food on their table.
