Welfare Watch - November 11, 2010 -  October Revenue Figures Increase

This week the Governor announced that October tax revenue figures had increased by more than 8 percent over a year ago at this same time.  The tax revenues compared to FY10 is 7.6 percent.

These numbers are welcomed news to everyone who is watching the economy.  This represents the fourth consecutive month for revenue increases.

Georgia faces some challenging times with its budget even if there were not a economic crisis.  According to the Georgia State University Fiscal Research Center, Georgia could face in 2012 a structural deficit of between $1.8 to $2.0 billion.  Some of this projected deficit has already been addressed by the current Governor, but there still remains a huge gap that needs to be filled.  Not all State departments have taken the same percentages of cuts.  Human Services have been cut by more than 20%.  These cuts in the budget do impact services to children and families in Georgia.

A rising tide raises all boats but a sinking tide sinks some boats more than others.
