Provider Watch - March 28, 2011 - Sales Tax Exemption Spared

HB385 - Tax Reform Bill - On Thursday of last week, the Special Joint Committee on Georgia Revenue met to discuss the latest version of HB385.  Of special concern for residential agencies was the proposed "sunsetting" of the sales tax exemption for Child Welfare Agencies that include child caring institutions, child placing agencies and maternity homes in 2014.

The Joint Committee Chair reported that the proposed substitute to HB385 would keep intact all current nonprofit exemptions.  "Intact" for Child Welfare Agencies would mean that there would be no sunset for the exemption for paying of sales tax for purchases made by non profit child welfare agencies.

Our advocacy was heard by the Special Joint Committee.  The many voices of our Child Welfare Agencies were powerfully heard.
