Improving the Lives of Children through Healthy Couple Relationships and Stable Homes:  The Healthy Relationships and Marriage Education Training

Date:  June 20, 2012 Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Location: Family Connections, 235 Peachtree St, Suite 1600  Atlanta, GA 30303

This training will prepare professionals to understand and support healthy co-parenting, couple and marital relationships for underserved and overrepresented populations in the child welfare system.  The Healthy Relationships and Marriage Education Training (HRMET) project, funded by the Administration on Children, Youth and Families Children's Bureau, seeks to meet the safety, permanency, and well-being needs of vulnerable children in the child welfare system by increasing child welfare workers’ access to and implementation of relationship and marriage education. Child Welfare providers in Georgia are fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in this 1-day pilot training designed to serve as a research model leading to an evidence-based national training resource.

In 2011, child welfare private agency staff who work with foster families participated in the first HRMET pilot in Georgia.  Participants in the roll out of the Georgia pilot responded very favorably to the potential of HRMET for enhancing positive outcomes for children and families. The next training is scheduled June 20, 2012 from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at Family Connections, 235 Peachtree St, Suite 1600  Atlanta, GA 30303.

Leading the training is Dr. Ted Futris, Associate Professor in Child and Family Development and a State Extension Family Life Specialists in Family and Consumer Sciences Extension at the University of Georgia. Dr. Futris provides state and national leadership for Extension programs in family life, with a particular focus on parenting education, relationship and marital enrichment, and stepfamily relations. In addition to programmatic evaluation, his primary areas of research include fathering, adolescent parenting, and co-parenting relationships. In particular his work focuses on the influence of couple and co-parenting relationships on parenting quality. His research and outreach programming has been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIH), USDA-Cooperative State Research Education and Extension Service,  Administration on Children, Youth and Families (ACF) Children’s Bureau as well as the Office of Community Services, Deputy under Secretary of the Army, and Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

This is a no-cost event to participants. The pilot includes pre and post training surveys, which are then used as part of the data and research.  A preregistration fee is required and is reimbursed on completion of the training.  A travel stipend and lunch is also provided the day of the training.

Although space is limited, you may register more than one participant per agency. Click here to register.
