Welfare Watch - August 24, 2011 - DHS Board Votes to Approve AFY12 and FY13 Budgets

The DHS Board met today to approve the AFY12 and FY13 budgets. A previous proposal presented at the August 17, 2011 Board meeting included a 2% reduction to child care. The impact of this proposal would have been a reduction in child care assistance caseload by approximately 5,100 children. Low income women will lose child care assistance possibly taking them out of the labor force. Loss of Federal Child Care Funding of $6,269,475.

Today, it was reported at the DHS Board meeting that the Department met with the Office of Planning and Budget.  OPB indicated that DHS would not be required to take the cut proposed for child care. The reduction was eliminated, restoring the total funds to $54,234,300.

This is extremely goods news for working poor families and foster families.
