Leading the discussions for both classes are Richard Delaney, PhD,
psychologist, author, and foster care consultant; and Betsy Keefer
Smalley, LSW, Director of Foster Care and Adoption Training,
Institute for Human Services (IHS), Columbus, Ohio.
The classes are part of a se ries developed as web versions of the
Ohio Institute for Human Services standardized pre-service training
curriculum in use throughout the United States.
Reducing Family Stress
Families need to maintain a healthy,
nurturing home in which a foster child can grow and thrive and where
everyone feels safe and comfortable. Bringing a foster child into
the home means a big change in lifestyle, and all family members
feel the impact of the change.
This class discusses the challenges families face when a foster
child enters the home and offers insight and advice for helping
manage the added stressors that accompany a new family dynamic. The
course also touches on parental expectations and stress reduction
strategies.Understanding
Behavior in Foster Children
Welcoming a foster child into your home
is full of challenges; the most exhausting for parents can be
troublesome behaviors rooted in a history of trauma. Parents need to
be able to decipher problem behavior in order to help the child heal
and learn new, more acceptable ways of expressing himself.
Understanding Behavior in Foster Children
looks at the function of surface behaviors and provides keys for
unlocking the underlying meaning of troubling behaviors. Also
covered are the ABCs of behavior, how to track behaviors, and the
relationship between parenting styles and a child's behavior.

Institute of Child Health & Human Development.
