Calendar of Opportunities - upcoming special event opportunities

Childkind provides foster and foster-to- adopt services for medically fragile children.  We are a full service agency that provides information sessions for those interested in Foster Parenting, IMPACT trainings and Youth Groups to the families we serve. Volunteers are needed for Building the Dream-Tour of Homes- We are doing the home tours in conjunction with Channel 2 and TLConcepts. TLConcepts is responsible for building the 3 homes and will be sponsoring non-profits. Each of the non-profits is assigned a home and the proceeds from the home tours will go to the non-profits. The homes are located at 17161 Birmingham Highway, Alpharetta, GA 30004. Volunteers are needed to collect tickets, greet guests, distribute information about the home and our organization, supervise guests as they tour the home. The dates are as follows:

Community Connections, Inc. is a domestic nonprofit (501)(c)(3) corporation governed by a Board of Directors.  The purpose of Community Connections, Inc. is to provide foster and adoptive homes and supportive services for children, from infants to teenagers, who are in the temporary custody of the Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS).  Community Connections is in need of volunteers ages 21 and older to babysit children in foster care ages 0-13 years while their foster parents attend training.  Any interested volunteers can contact Community Connections to schedule an orientation and complete a Criminal Records Check and Child Protective Services Check.  There are typically 20-25 children in foster care in attendance who are divided by age groups into separate child care rooms.  In addition to Community Connections Staff present, five volunteers are needed for each training.  The scheduled trainings below are all held in Stone Mountain, GA.  For additional information contact Karen Jackson at Community Connections, jackson101@bellsouth.net or (770) 465-9644, ext 101. Volunteer Jobs - ongoing volunteer opportunities

CCS Volunteer Program Creative Community Services (CCS) works to improve the quality of life for children, adults and families who are facing special challenges through community-based supports and services.  CCS provides services for adults and teens who have disabilities, who may need some assistance in order to live as independently as possible in communities of their choice.  CCS also provides services for young people who may need assistance with developing their strengths and talents, in addition to learning to manage behaviors that have been challenging for them, through our Therapeutic Foster Care Program, Wraparound Program, and Respite Program.  While our Volunteer Program is under new management, and at this time is undergoing updates and development, please feel free to explore our website and the opportunities available to Volunteers.  In addition to learning about exciting volunteer opportunities within our diverse programs, you are welcome to complete an application to let us know you are interested in learning more about our organization, and we will be happy to contact you with additional information. Childkind provides foster and foster-to- adopt services for medically fragile children.  We are a full service agency that provides information sessions for those interested in Foster Parenting, IMPACT trainings and Youth Groups to the families we serve. Our Volunteers participate in our Special Events and with our monthly Youth Groups that meet while our foster parents participate in ongoing mandatory trainings. Volunteers are asked to assist with our youth groups led by our Placement Specialists at Briarwood Rd in Atlanta, Georgia. The children engage in arts and crafts activities, life skill trainings and outings.  The youth groups meet one Saturday per month during the school year from 10-1PM.  Mentoring opportunities are available as well. Devereux Georgia Treatment Network is a non-profit organization providing services around the nation for persons with emotional, developmental and educational disabilities.  Volunteer needs include:  *Mentors - a mature adult that will provide a positive role model relationship through investing quality time in "getting to know" the client.  This mature adult must be at least 21 years old and spend a minimum of 1 hour a week with his/her assigned client.  *Tutors - to assist students in improving reading, math, handwriting, spelling, vocabulary skills, etc. this adult must be at least 21 years old and spend one or two days a week for one to two hours each of those days tutoring.  Tutoring happens between the hours of 9AM and 3PM (during school hours).  *Special Events and Administrative - must be at least 18 years old and would assist different departments in administrative duties (stuffing mailers, holiday parties, filing, setting up for fundraising activities, etc.).  Please note that all individuals interested in becoming a volunteer will be subject to the application and screening requirements.  Please contact Cameron Turner at cturner@devereux.org or (770) 427-0147 ext. 2291 for more information.  Link to website: www.devereuxga.org

Families First
is a 116-year-old metro Atlanta and Georgia agency whose mission is to “strengthen and preserve families in partnership with them and their communities”. Families First is dedicated to serving the local community by providing a safe haven to abused and neglected children through adoption, foster care and after school programs; offering accessible crisis counseling to families and individuals on issues such as drug abuse, teen pregnancy and prevention, domestic violence and anger management; and work side by side with neighborhood residents to engage in community problem solving on issues such as safe children, safe streets and safe housing. Last fiscal year we served over 100,000 clients in metro Atlanta. Volunteer needs include: *Birthday Sponsor – help 6 or 7 abused teens living in a group home by baking or buying them a birthday cake and giving them one birthday gift on  their special day *Male Coach – men needed to coach a young man in living skills, provide role modeling, friendship and maybe career exposure. Volunteer must be college age or older. If you drive it requires a valid driver’s license and car insurance. Usually meet on weekends.  Commitment of 12 months minimum once you are matched is required and a one-time training including a manual. Locations vary; some are accessible by MARTA. A thorough background screening check must be completed before you can start this position. Fulton County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Inc. is a volunteer program committed to making the juvenile justice system and the community more responsive to the needs of abused and neglected children.  Our trained and supervised volunteers speak for the best interests of children involved in deprivation proceedings in Fulton County.  The CASA’s only job is to speak for the child, to assure his/her best interests don’t get overlooked while in protective custody and to assist in having the child/children placed in a safe, nurturing, permanent home as quickly as possible.  Individuals interested in becoming a volunteer must be at least 21 years old, complete a 40 hour pre-service training and successfully complete a criminal background investigation.  Please contact Marva at Marva.Evans@co.fulton.ga.us or (404) 224-4720 for more information. 

Good Shepherd Therapeutic Center We would like a bank of volunteers that would come out from 1 time per week to 1 time per month regularly scheduled to do any of the following things: Tutoring, Recreation Support, Art/Activity -  share a gift or talent that they enjoy with the boys by teaching them how to do something new regardless of the discipline; Volunteer to be extra support on off campus activities; Therapeutic Riding - Leaders and side walkers for rider’s with disabilities during the day; Experienced Riders that would like to exercise the horses – would need to go through our training, etc.; Animal Assisted Therapy - Either on their own after training, or with our animals and/or kids take small animals into nursing homes, hospital’s and hospice. Can do in any facility in any community, but need to participate in training monthly on site at Good Shepherd; Wild Life Rehabilitation; Network of volunteers that work with our staff to rehabilitate injured and/or orphaned wildlife – training provided, on site her or with the appropriate training can approve for them to care for in their home; Administration - Need someone to help with our newsletter and work with our PR/Marketing firm to keep our website up do date; Facilities - Need wood workers that will helps us update our beds furniture in the boys dorms.  We are attempting to use our existing beds and reconfigure into a bunk bed with closets at the foot of the bed and each resident having a foot locker. Rooms need remodeling and painting.  Would like someone that will coordinate a couple of work weekends to paint the boys dorms and put up curtains once the beds are done.  Please contact Good Shepherd at 706-655-2354

The Juvenile Justice Fund always needs volunteers to assist with database entry, filing, etc.  These can be short- or long-term commitments.  CEASE (Center to End Adolescent Sexual Exploitation) also trains and supervises volunteers who will advocate on behalf of sexually exploited and abused children involved in juvenile court proceedings.  CEASE volunteers work in partnership with juvenile court judges, child advocate attorneys, and probation officers--with supervision by CEASE staff--to seek alternatives to detention and to recommend appropriate services for the victims and their families.
