Judge Rules Catholic Charities Has No Right to Contract - In a very brief decision Thursday, Illinois Judge John Schmidt granted summary judgment to the state of Illinois, ruling that Catholic Charities has no right to contracts with the state child welfare agency.

After Illinois enacted its civil union law, Catholic Charities in Springfield, Peoria, Joliet, and Belleville filed in court seeking a declaratory judgment as to whether they could continue their practice of referring unmarried, co-habitating couples to other agencies for foster care and adoption services. The state had informed the agency that the referrals violated Illinois law by failing to recognize civil unions.  More
